Fears of immigration raids spread across Chicago over the weekend as the Trump administration signaled an escalation of enforcement in sanctuary cities. The concerns follow recent operations in Boston and a massive raid at a Hyundai plant in Georgia, which officials described as a preview of nationwide action.
Tom Homan, the administration’s border chief, told CNN that sanctuary cities would be major targets in the coming days, echoing the deportation agenda central to President Trump’s second term. The Department of Homeland Security blamed Boston Mayor Michelle Wu’s policies for “harboring criminals,” though immigration violations are generally civil infractions rather than crimes.
The looming operations in Chicago come amid broader tensions over the federal government’s deployment of National Guard troops to cities. Washington, D.C., has already filed a lawsuit, arguing the Trump administration violated the Constitution by sending armed troops without local approval. Officials say the Guard is performing policing duties barred by law, while critics call the deployment unnecessary and costly despite reported drops in violent crime.

In Chicago, the potential arrival of troops coincided with Mexican Independence Day celebrations, traditionally a vibrant cultural weekend in the Pilsen neighborhood. Though parades and parties went ahead, residents carried orange whistles to alert one another if immigration agents appeared. Other events, such as the Latino Heritage Festival in Wauconda and the long-running Fiestas Patrias parade in Waukegan, were canceled or postponed due to enforcement fears.
Local leaders, including Gov. JB Pritzker and Mayor Brandon Scott of nearby Baltimore, vowed to resist what they describe as federal overreach. Activists distributed flyers reminding families of their rights if approached by ICE agents.
Despite heightened anxiety, many Chicagoans emphasized resilience. “Now more than ever is when we need to demonstrate that we are united and we are a community,” said longtime Pilsen resident Araceli Lucio.
