Forecasters are bracing for strong storms that will bring a much-needed break from the draining heat that’s gripped the region over the last several days.

Temperatures in the midst of the storms on Friday will only reach the mid-70s ahead of a sunny and seasonable weekend in Philadelphia and surrounding areas.

“Potentially significant flash flooding is possible this afternoon into tonight.” The Mount Holly X account posted. “A Flood Watch is in effect for the entire area. Some isolated severe storms are possible as well. Please heed any warnings issued today. NEVER drive through flooded roads!”

Forecasters warn that some storms could turn severe with time, as strong winds and periods of thunder will persists with some lightning possible.

The likelyhood of rain in Philadelphia will start to increase after lunchtime and hit a peak at 3 p.m. and again at 9 p.m. after a brief lull.

There is expected to be less than an inch of rain is expected in Philadelphia, with higher rainfall totals in northern areas like Trenton, where over 2 inches of rain is forecasted.

New Jersey declares State of Emergency

Tahesha Way, Acting New Jersey Gov., declared a State of Emergency for “flash flooding, severe thunderstorms, intense rainfall, and damaging wind gusts.”

The State of Emergency will go into effect 2 p.m. and allow resources to be deployed to all 21 counties throughout the duration of the storm.

“I urge all New Jerseyans to remain alert, follow all safety protocols, and monitor the proper channels for the duration of these storms,” Acting Gov. Way said.
