Janice Turner, the mother of pop singer Sean Kingston, is facing deportation from the United States following her conviction in a federal fraud case that has drawn widespread attention.

The 62-year-old was found guilty earlier this year of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and four counts of wire fraud in connection to a luxury goods scheme that prosecutors say defrauded businesses out of more than $1 million. Authorities allege Turner and Kingston used falsified wire transfer receipts to obtain high-end items, including luxury vehicles, electronics, and jewelry, without making legitimate payments.

According to court documents, Turner played a central role in the operation, often acting as the intermediary in deals and supplying fake confirmation notices. Prosecutors described her as the “nerve center” of the scheme, managing communications and logistics.

Turner’s sentencing is scheduled for August 28, 2025, in a South Florida federal court. In a motion filed ahead of the hearing, her legal team is asking for leniency, citing her age, health concerns, and lack of a prior criminal record. They argue that Turner did not personally profit from the scheme and should receive a sentence of no more than 30 months in prison.

But for Turner, prison time is only part of what’s at stake. As a non-citizen, she faces mandatory deportation following any federal prison sentence. If carried out, she would be removed to her native Jamaica, permanently separating her from her son and family members who reside in the U.S.

Her attorneys have also requested that, if sentenced, she be placed in a facility close to her family—ideally in Tallahassee—so her loved ones can visit her while she serves her time.

A final hearing on the sentencing motion is set for July 23, ahead of the formal sentencing in late August. The case has raised broader questions about immigration consequences tied to criminal convictions, especially for long-time U.S. residents like Turner.
