Canada has a new way to improve the spread of disease through drug use. A Vancouver non-profit has installed the first ever crack pipe vending machine. Drug users can purchase the pipes for $0.25 in hopes they will not share their pipes with others and spread diseases spread by shared drug paraphernalia such as hepatitis C or HIV/AIDS.
“Various studies show a correlation between HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases with crack pipe use. People can have sores on their lips, and [get diseases] from cracked or broken pipes,” said Mark Townsend, an addictions worker with the Portland Hotel Society.
