Philadelphia School District to reveal ‘Asbestos Management’ plan

Officials of the Philadelphia School District will be gathering Thursday (May 29) at noon to discuss the school board’s agenda; at the top of the list, Asbestos.
“The Board of Education will consider a proposed agreement between The School District of Philadelphia and the United States Department of Justice with respect to an ongoing investigation of the District’s asbestos management practices,” according to action item added to the school’s board agenda late on Wednesday.
According to sources, the agreement details the ongoing investigation of the school district’s handling and management of asbestos in its buildings, and possibly providing solution to the issue.
The details of the agreement were not immediately made public.
After careful consideration, the school board meeting was moved up to noon on May 29, 2025, with this issue right at the top. Superintendent Dr. Tony Watlington will be expected to make opening remarks, followed by the speakers of the meeting, and then a vote by the board.
In the past three years, at least eight Philadelphia school buildings due to exposed asbestos.
