Police in Hendersonville, Tennessee, arrested a father in the shooting death of his 11-year-old daughter at their home and then tried to cover it up, saying she was shot walking home from school, The Tennessean reports.

Timothy Batts, 29, was charged with reckless homicide, tampering with evidence, false reporting, and possessing a firearm as a felon, Hendersonville Police Department Det. Sgt. Jim Vaughn stated on Tuesday. His bond is $1 million.

On Monday, investigators were confounded by Batts’ story that someone shot his daughter, Timea Lashay Batts, as she walked home from the school bus stop. He took her to the hospital, but it was too late.

Vaughn said investigators found evidence that the shooting occurred inside the family’s home in what’s described as a quiet neighborhood.

A statement from Sumner County Schools said the “entire school district is grieved to learn of the tragic loss of one of our sixth grade students.” It described Timea as “a bright and kind girl who was well loved by her classmates and teachers.”

The community held a vigil to honor Timea. Neighbors told The Tennessean that she was a cheerleader and a softball player. They described her family as “good people,” who reared respectful children.
