The Super Bowl LIX Champion Eagles are moving on from 6x Pro-Bowl CB Darius Slay,

According to ESPN. Slay’s release will be designated as a post-June 1 transaction, saving the Eagles $4.3 million against the salary cap.

Howie Roseman, Executive VP of the Philadelphia Eagles, is looking to focus on developing the young talent.

“As the cap gets tighter, as all our expensive players start becoming expensive, you have to go with young players,” Roseman said.

Roseman has seemingly mastered draft season. From acquiring A.J. Brown on Draft night in 2022, to all the ‘dawgs’ he’s drafted via Georgia, Roseman continues to get the max value out of whatever deal he involves himself in.

The Eagles loss of Darius Slay was foreshadowed with their first two picks last April in rookie cornerbacks Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean.  Both had standout rookie campaigns for a unit that finished No. 1 in overall defense and against the pass in 2024.

Slay, 34, played the past five seasons in Philadelphia, earning the captain’s honor multiple times and is credited with helping shepherd the young defensive backs, including Mitchell.

Slay mentioned last month that he planned to play one more season before retiring. He hoped to remain an Eagle, even on a reworked deal. Slay’s other preference would be a return to Detroit, where he was drafted in 2013, and spent his first seven seasons in the NFL.

“I’ve got one more left (on my contract), but you know how that works,” Slay said on the St.Brown podcast . “Whatever they want to do, I might re-sign back, hopefully. If I ain’t, we’ll see what I’m doing because I do want to play one more year, for sure.”

Last season, Slay played in 14 games and recorded 49 tackles, 13 passes defended, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
