Temple University’s Department of Public Safety (TUDPS) has decided to implement cutting edge technology to assist with regulating the crimes committed on campus. Temple University becomes the first University in the tristate (Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware) to implement ‘ZeroEyes’ into their department of public safety.

ZeroEyes is an artificial intelligence (AI) based program that uses AI to detect brandished firearms within view of any camera equipped with its software. ZeroEyes was founded in 2018 by a team of Navy SEALs and elite technologists following the unfortunate Marjory Stoneman Douglas school active shooter incident. These military men created ZeroEyes to protect people from having to face similar circumstances.

Temple University — placed in the heart of North Philadelphia — has been subjected to a more than average amount of crime. Last year, Temple University Officer Chris Fitzgerald was in the line of duty attempting to stop a carjacking, when he was fatally shot by an 18 year old.

ZeroEyes technology is designed to negate instances similar to this from occurring. If a weapon is detected through ZeroEyes, an alert is sent to Temple University’s Department of Public Safety within seconds, allowing them to respond as quickly as possible in the event of a gun-related incident.

“We are very excited about ZeroEyes’ ability to provide rapid detection and intelligence involving brandished guns on our campus,” said Jennifer Griffin, Temple’s chief of police and vice president for public safety. “ZeroEyes is another piece of technology we have implemented that not only makes the Temple community safer, but also makes the city safer. There is no doubt about it: Philadelphia and Temple have a growing partnership in safety, and we’re proud to be a part of it.”
