Amandla Stenberg has gone from “the little girl who played Rue in The Hunger Games” to a smart young woman who is not afraid to speak up when it counts. Back in the Spring, she completed a school project that explained the frustrating effects of cultural appropriation. A couple of months after that, she called out Kylie Jenner for being a habitual appropriator who is keen to rock Black culture for style, but never speaks up on Civil Rights issues pertaining to the same people who created the trends she loves.

The 16-year-old actress/musician  is on the cover of Dazed magazine, where she talks about her fearlessness, why people shouldn’t underestimate youth, and more.

“I think people discredit teenagers and how wise they can be,” Stenberg told the magazine about how people may sometimes perceive her. “Sometimes I meet teenagers who are much wiser than many adults I’ve met, because they haven’t let any insecurities or doubts about themselves get in the way of their thoughts.”

Stenberg continued saying that she is working on amassing more acting credits, and expressed that she’d love to direct one day, particularly under the guidance of Spike Lee.

“I think I would die, studying with him. As much as I want to be fulfilled creatively as an actress, and get to be in roles that are meaningful and impactful, I hope the same thing for myself as a director, one day,” she said. “I want to make things that have an impact on how we look at the world. I know it’s a tall glass to fill, but it’s a glass that really does need to be filled, as an African American woman.”

This is definitely a girl who knows what she wants. Check out the full interview here.
