Every girl has her preference when it comes to dating guys, and often there’s one in particular they go for, a thug.Why do black women love thugs? What’s the appeal? There are several reasons why certain black women love thugs, some you may agree with and you may not. However, you can’t deny there is thirst and love for thugs.

The media plays an integral role in perpetuating this sometimes true stereotype through movies, music videos, and even the headlines you read on your favorite blog sites. Several years ago, actress Lauren London ruffled a few feathers after an interview with King Magazine. She was asked about her preference in men, and whether she liked an “honest thug.” Her response was:
I love guys who are street. I won’t even give soft guys a chance. Menace II Society is my shit! Caine was like my first crush. Actually, O-Dog was my true dream guy. I was in love with him, from that opening scene where he pops the convenience-store worker. He had me from that gunshot [laughs]. He was ’hood, and I loved that.”

Even though she received criticism for her honesty, there are women who are attracted to guys who appear “thuggish.” There are select guys who have clout and influence in neighborhoods or in industries that equals to status and respect. For some women, that’s attractive which draws them towards only certain guys. Whether this is right or wrong, status is important to some women (and men) and plays a part in why women love thugs. The downside to loving a thug can often be a hassle also. So, is loving a thug worth it? Ms. London proclaimed her love for thugs and got one. Now she’s apart of a rapper’s “baby mama squad” that only needs one more person to complete a basketball team’s starting lineup. Maybe there should be “thug loving selectivity” from here on out ladies.
