Lionsgate’s ‘For Colored Girls’ opened in the No. 3 spot with an estimated $20.1 million box office.
The Tyler Perry-helmed ensemble piece boasts an outstanding cast including Loretta Devine, Janet Jackson, Whoopi Goldberg, Kimberly Elise, Phylicia Rashad and Thandie Newton, and is Perry’s first directorial effort not based on his own material.
For Colored Girls is Perry’s first R-Rated film and is based on Ntozake Shange’s play For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow is Enuf. The play is comprised of 20 poems performed by seven women known only by a color. The prose deals with a myriad of heavy topics from love and abandonment to rape and abortion.
