SEPTA’s New Bus Network Launches Sunday, Bringing Major Route Changes Across Philadelphia
SEPTA’s long-awaited New Bus Network will begin rolling out Sunday, Aug. 23, marking the first phase of a sweeping redesign aimed at making bus service more frequent, reliable and easier to navigate.
The changes include two new routes, six route extensions and the elimination of seven existing routes. Most Phase 1 changes take effect Sunday, with additional changes involving Routes 105 and 106 beginning Monday, Aug. 24.
Among the biggest changes are the introduction of Route 72, connecting Frankford Transit Center and Cedarbrook Plaza, and Route 76, linking North and South Philadelphia. Route 45 will also provide seven-day service to the Navy Yard, while Route 79 will be extended into West Philadelphia.
SEPTA General Manager Scott A. Sauer said the plan is designed to prioritize riders by creating a more frequent and reliable network. The agency estimates that full implementation will put about 1.1 million additional people within a 10-minute walk of frequent bus service.
However, some riders will see routes discontinued or reduced. Routes 35, 47M, 62, 78, 80, 89 and 106 are being eliminated as part of the phased redesign, with SEPTA directing riders to alternative routes where available.
SEPTA is encouraging riders to review their routes before Sunday. The agency has launched a New Bus Network Trip Planner, along with updated maps and bus-stop signage, to help passengers understand how their daily trips may change.
The redesign will continue in additional phases through 2027 as SEPTA works toward a broader overhaul of its bus system.
