Brandy Reimagines ‘A Different World’ Theme Song for Netflix Sequel
R&B singer Brandy will lend her signature voice to one of television’s most recognizable theme songs when Netflix brings A Different World back to Hillman College.
Netflix announced Tuesday that the Grammy-winning singer and actress will perform a new version of the classic opening theme for its upcoming sequel series. The new A Different World will premiere September 24 on Netflix.
Brandy grew up watching the original sitcom and said the opportunity carries deep personal meaning. She recalled watching the series whenever it aired and remembering the emotions the theme song created for her.
“Singing this iconic theme song for A Different World means everything to me,” Brandy told Netflix’s Tudum. She also expressed respect for the song’s history and the legendary performers who helped make it memorable.
The original series debuted in 1987 and followed students navigating college life at the fictional historically Black Hillman College. The show became a cultural touchstone for its portrayal of Black college students, relationships, friendships and social issues.
Netflix’s sequel introduces a new generation of Hillman students while connecting the story to familiar characters. Maleah Joi Moon stars as Deborah Wayne, the daughter of original characters Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert.
