Whitney Houston’s Legacy Lives On With New Barbie Doll
Whitney Houston has officially joined the Barbie family as Mattel honors the late music icon with a collectible doll inspired by one of her most memorable looks.
Mattel unveiled the Barbie Signature Whitney Houston Doll on August 9, the date that would have marked Houston’s 63rd birthday. The release celebrates the singer’s extraordinary career and lasting impact on music and pop culture.
The doll recreates Houston’s appearance from her 1987 music video for “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me).” The design features her signature voluminous curls, a colorful outfit, statement earrings and makeup inspired by the iconic video. Mattel also included a microphone stand to capture Houston’s connection to the stage.
Pat Houston, Whitney’s sister-in-law and executor of her estate, worked with Mattel on the project. She explained that conversations about creating a Whitney Houston Barbie began roughly two decades ago. The original concept focused on Houston’s appearance in the 1992 film “The Bodyguard,” but the idea eventually evolved into the tribute fans can now collect.
The doll arrives during a major year for Houston’s legacy. In 2026, the Recording Academy honored the superstar with a Lifetime Achievement Award, while her estate also celebrated her music with the release of the “WH1TNEY” album. The collection features all 11 of Houston’s Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hits.
The Barbie release gives fans another way to celebrate Houston’s influence across generations. Her powerful vocals, memorable performances and signature style continue to inspire artists and audiences decades after she first rose to international fame.
Mattel’s tribute also connects Houston’s music legacy with a toy franchise that has celebrated influential women across entertainment, fashion, sports and culture.
