Philadelphia’s Portal Needs a New Home by October 31 or Could Leave the City
Philadelphia’s popular Portal installation at City Hall could soon be leaving the city unless organizers find a new location and local partners.
The interactive artwork, which allows people in Philadelphia to see and communicate in real time with people in cities around the world, is scheduled to leave its City Hall location on October 31, 2026. Organizers are hoping to secure a new host and transition plan by the end of September.
“Our permit is unfortunately running out,” Nicolas Klaus of the Portals Organization told 6abc.
The Portal first arrived in Philadelphia in 2024 as part of events surrounding the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary. It was initially located at LOVE Park before being moved to the City Hall courtyard following vandalism.

Since then, the installation has become a popular attraction for residents and tourists. Michelle Borges, who visited the Portal with a friend from Brazil, called it “one of the coolest spots I saw in the U.S.”
Organizers say they are looking for a location that is publicly accessible and representative of Philadelphia. A potential host would need to provide adequate space, electricity and internet connectivity, along with financial support for relocation, refurbishment and ongoing maintenance.
“We are looking for a place that is accessible to the public and is representative of Philadelphia,” Klaus said.
The organization says Philadelphia’s Portal has attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors and generated hundreds of millions of online impressions. If a new local partnership cannot be secured, the installation could be relocated to another city.
