Northeast Philly I-95 Ramp to Close Permanently Aug. 21

Drivers in Northeast Philadelphia will soon lose access to an I-95 on-ramp at Bridge Street as PennDOT moves forward with a major highway reconstruction project.

The Bridge Street ramp will permanently close at 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, according to PennDOT. Once closed, drivers will be directed along Tacony Street and State Road to the I-95 entrance at Milnor Street. Officials are advising motorists to allow extra travel time because of expected congestion and delays.

The closure is part of a $267.9 million I-95 improvement project involving the Bridge Street and Betsy Ross Bridge interchanges. The work includes reconstructing the highway viaduct over Bridge and Tacony streets, shifting ramps and upgrading traffic signals. The overall project began in 2022 and is expected to continue through 2028.

A replacement I-95 access point is planned near Tacony Street and the Delaware Avenue extension. Construction on that connector has not yet begun, and it is expected to open in 2027.

PennDOT will also shift northbound I-95 traffic onto reconstructed southbound lanes through the project area overnight on Aug. 21, from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. Aug. 22, as crews prepare for additional work at the interchange.
