A massive egg recall is underway after a salmonella outbreak sickened dozens of people across seven U.S. states. The recall affects nearly 2 million dozen eggs distributed by the August Egg Company, based in Hilmar, California.

Health officials have linked the outbreak to cage-free and organic brown eggs sold under brand names like Raley’s, Marketside, and O Organics. The eggs were distributed between early February and mid-May 2025 and sold in stores such as Walmart, Safeway, and Raley’s.

As of now, 79 people have fallen ill, and 21 have been hospitalized with salmonella infections. The states impacted include California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Nebraska, Indiana, and Illinois.

The recalled products have sell-by dates ranging from March 4 to June 19, 2025, and Julian dates between 032 and 126. Consumers are urged to check their egg cartons and immediately discard any affected products or return them to the store for a refund.

Salmonella is a common bacterial infection that causes symptoms like diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps, typically appearing within six hours to six days after exposure. While most healthy adults recover without medical treatment, young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are at greater risk of severe illness.

In response to the outbreak, August Egg Company has halted all distribution of fresh eggs and is sending the remaining stock to be pasteurized, a process that eliminates harmful bacteria.

Consumers seeking more information are encouraged to visit the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website for detailed recall updates and product codes.

Health authorities continue to monitor the situation and urge the public to remain cautious as investigations continue.
