Authorities have launched a homicide investigation following an Amber Alert issued Tuesday for 3-year-old Nola Dinkins in New Castle County, Delaware.

On Wednesday, police announced the Amber Alert had been canceled after determining that the child’s mother had provided false information about the reported abduction.

According to New Castle County police, law enforcement agencies in Maryland are also involved, with assistance from the FBI.

The mother initially claimed that Nola was taken at gunpoint by a man around 7:16 p.m. Tuesday on the 500 block of Gender Road in Newark. She reportedly told officers that she had pulled over because Nola was upset, and at that point, a man with a gun abducted the child.

Police have since focused their search on the area where the abduction was falsely reported, as well as near the Liberty Pointe Apartments.

Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact authorities by calling 911.
