Carnival Cruise Bans Handheld Fans Due To Safety Concerns

Carnival Cruise Line has updated its list of prohibited items to include handheld electric fans, a change that has sparked mixed reactions among frequent cruisers. The policy, which took effect in early June 2025, applies to all sailings and is aimed at improving onboard safety and managing power usage.
The cruise line says the decision was made due to concerns about the safety risks associated with certain fan models, as well as the strain they can place on the ship’s electrical systems. Some fans, particularly those with lithium-ion batteries or high voltage requirements, have been flagged as potential fire hazards.
“We understand that some guests use personal fans for comfort, especially in warmer climates,” Carnival said in a statement. “However, to maintain safety standards and avoid overloading cabin circuits, personal fans are no longer permitted.”
Passengers who rely on fans for medical reasons can still bring them aboard with prior approval. These guests must submit a request through Carnival’s Special Needs department before their cruise, along with documentation supporting the medical need.
The new rule has drawn frustration from some travelers who say small fans help them sleep or manage hot cabin temperatures. Others, however, support the move, noting that cruise cabins are typically air-conditioned and that safety should take priority.
Carnival has not clarified whether fans already brought on board without approval will be confiscated or stored during the trip, but guests are advised to check the updated prohibited items list before packing.
This change follows a broader trend of cruise lines tightening safety protocols and energy regulations across their fleets.
