Flyers and Sixers pick Las Vegas Sphere Designer for new South Philly arena

The Flyers and Sixers are using the same design firm that build the Las Vegas Sphere was expected to take on the newest project in South Philadelphia, the Xfinity Mobile Arena.
“The Philadelphia 76ers and Comcast Spectacor have selected an architecture firm to design their new South Philadelphia stadium” writes Jake Blumgart at the Inquirer. “The partners have chosen Populous, a global arena design firm, to craft the plans for the new South Philadelphia stadium. They will be partnering with architecture firm Moody Nolan, which has an office on Market Street.”
Populous was in charge of designing the Las Vegas Sphere and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and is currently building the Buffalo Bills’ new stadium.
The Wells Fargo Center signage was removed from the side of the South Philadelphia arena as it prepares to rebrand into the Xfinity Mobile Arena in September.
Installation of new signage is set for Sept. 2, with additional branding and digital displays to accompany the new name.
“Philadelphia is home to the most passionate fans in the country, and that competitive spirit is a perfect complement to the Xfinity Mobile brand,” said Steve Croney, chief operating officer of connectivity and platforms at Comcast.
The arena, which opened in 1996, has hosted decades of major sports moments and entertainment events, including NBA and NHL games, NCAA championships, concerts, and national political conventions. It is also home to the Philadelphia Wings and Villanova men’s basketball.
