In Cape May County, the Middle Thorofare Bridge is in critical condition.

The bridge itself was made in 1939 and it has carried over millions of cars. The bridge itself currently has a $2.50 for a round trip. The locals in the area are raising concerns on the bridge for their safety.

About a week ago, the bridge motor that allows the bridge to open for boats suddenly stopped working. Unfortunately, for some of the original machinery being so old, it will be harder to find replacement pieces. Although the township completed a quick fix for the bridge, they decided to leave it open for the boats so there wouldn’t be anymore complications.

With the repair of the bridge surfacing, CBS Philly took a deeper dive in all of the conditions of the surrounding bridges in the area. The ares were Strathmere, Sea Isle, Avalon, and Stone Harbor. The bridges were all in very rough conditions and bad shape.

At this point in time, the Middle Thorofare Bridge is at a point that is past repairs and just needs to be completely replaced.

Some of the reports that were provided for the investigation show that any type of deep repairs or replacements wouldn’t even be considered until 2030. The cost would be near a quarter of a billon dollars, and there is no way to know who would be paying for that.
