Rutgers University honored rapper/actor Queen Latifah with an honorary doctorate in fine arts Monday morning at the schools 2018 summer commencement ceremony. Latifah was born in Newark, New Jersey and raised in East Orange. She told the graduates to remember the importance of home.

As she delivered the commencement address, Latifah said, “I’m¬†always asked by people what should I call you? Queen? Latifah? Dana? After today, you can just call me doctor.”¬†¬†She continued, “Graduates, home shapes you, make sure you shape it back. Take a chance on that next kid who¬†comes¬†along¬†the way, the way someone took a chance on you, the way someone took a chance on me.”
