Roxanne Shante, an early hip-hop pioneer from Queens, NY, rose to prominence in the mid-eighties, during one of hip-hop’s first series of battles. Now, she talks to Ed Lover about the movie based on her life, “Roxanne, Roxanne” which premiered at Sundance this year, and how it came to fruition. She opens up about the process of making a movie based on her life, and the difficulties that she encountered watching some of the hardest parts of her life play out again on screen.
