Tyler Perry has a long history of creating projects for Black people to act in and be entertained by, so the casting for his upcoming show has fans scratching their heads in confusion.

The filmmaker received major backlash on social media for choosing a mostly White cast in his upcoming TLC series Too Close To Home. But Perry has a different point of view these days than that of some people in the African-American community.

He said of the flak he’s been getting: “That’s totally reverse racism because it was coming from African-American people.” He continued, “I don’t know if it was because they thought I should only be giving jobs to black people. Well, I think that’s ridiculous. If you look at the hundreds of black people I’ve given jobs to and even the ones I’ve made millionaires, people of color, I just think it’s unfair.”

The series centers around a fictional President of the United States who gets involved in a political scandal. Perry cites his days of traveling the world while promoting the Madea movies for his new perspective on things, saying, “I’m just finding out more as I travel the country and world, the more I meet people, we’re all the same. We all got the same dramas. So I’m not seeing color as much as I did anymore in the sense of our stories. Our stories are so similar.”

Too Close To Home premieres January 4th on TLC. Will you be watching?
