Early 2000s Reminisce: Sampled Party Anthems

There’s something so cool about pulling from the past to enjoy a party in the present. And, believe it or not, some of the best party anthems sampled hits from the yesteryears.

For his debut hit, “What’s Your Fantasy?”, Ludacris sampled an uptempo Luke and 2 Live Crew song. Jay Z and Pharrell Williams went back to the 1970s to grab a melody from Rick James. And Three 6 Mafia deviated from Southern Hip-Hop to classic R&B, sampling a jumping Marvin Gaye track.

Below, learn which party anthems you love, used samples.

Ludacris ft. Shawnna – “What’s Your Fantasy?!” (Sample: Luke ft. 2 Live Crew – “Face Down, Ass Up”)

You don’t have to wonder where the inspiration for sampling this Luke song came from— just look at their titles.

Jay Z ft. Pharrell Williams + Omillio Sparks- “I Just Wanna Love You” (Sample: Rick James, “Give It to Me Baby”)

You can hear Rick James all over this song produced by Virginia-bred super group, The Neptunes.

OutKast – “So Fresh, So Clean” (Sample: Joe Simon, “Before the Night Is Over”)

The Atlanta duo have never shied away from their love of 1970’s funk and it’s clear from the minute you hear this original Joe Simon song.

M.O.P. – “Ante Up” (Sample: Sam & Dave, “Soul Sister, Brown Sugar”)

The dramatic horns used at the beginning of Sam & Dave’s song was what really set this M.O.P. party anthem off.

Erykah Badu – “Bag Lady” (Sample: Soul Mann & the Brothers, “Bumpy’s Lament”)

We’d like to think of this as more of a kick-back party song than booty shaking. Nonetheless the original for the “Shaft” soundtrack was much more smoothed out.

Three 6 Mafia ft. UGK + Project Pat – “Sippin’ on Some Syrup” (Sample: Marvin Gaye, “Is That Enough”)

Memphis duo, DJ Paul and Juicy J of Three 6 Mafia added serious 808s to this R&B 1978 song by Marvin Gaye.

Carl Thomas – “Summer Rain” (Sample: Stevie Wonder, “Summer Soft”)

Aside from the fact that this song samples a 1976 Stevie Wonder melody, you should also know it was produced by the late Heavy D.

Reflection Eternal – “Move Somethin’” (Sample: Soul Dog, “Can’t Stop Loving You”)

If this original Soul Dog song sounds familiar, it’s probably because Common, The Weeknd, The Game and Trina have sampled it too.

504 Boyz – “Wobble Wobble” (Sample: The Showboys, “Drag Rap”)

QUeen-bred rap group, The Showboys probably never thought their 1986 song would be sampled for one of New Orleans hottest party songs of the decade.

Bow Wow – “Bounce With Me” (Sample: Barry White, “Love Serenade (Part II)”)

It’s ever so slight, but you can hear the sampled elements in Bow Wow’s 2000 hit.
