Producer and writer Cheo Coker (Notorious, Southland) is the creator of Marvel’s collaboration with Netflix, “Luke Cage.” He stopped by the studio with composer and music producer Adrian Younge, as well as A Tribe Called Quest’s Ali Shaheed Muhammad, both of whom did the music for the show. They are also both legendary veterans of hip-hop and heavyweight contributors to its legacy, share their thoughts on today’s hip-hop music, which is very different from the scene they were influenced by and subsequently contributed to.

They explain some of the major differences they have noticed between hip-hop now and then, and muse on why these changes have taken place. Ali notes that “lately [hip-hop] hasn’t been a complete reflection” of the community it comes from, and that there is “not a lot of love communicated” in music as there used to be.
