When you think of Philadelphia sports in the last 20 years, what athlete comes to mind? “The Answer,” Allen Iverson. The 6’0” guard from Newport News, Virginia was drafted as the #1 selection by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1996 NBA Draft. Iverson, with his Hip-Hop style and his trademark “crossover” was able to set the NBA on fire on his way to setting numerous Rookie Records and winning the Schick Rookie of the Year award.

In the 2000-2001 NBA season, Iverson who was awarded League MVP, averaged a career high 31.1 points per game as he led his 76ers team to their first NBA Finals appearance since winning it all in 1983. What a year 2001 was, not only sports fans here in Philly, but for people all across the globe, as they were able to see and learn what we in Philly already knew; Allen Iverson was a true sports hero. Despite his size, he played with tenacity, determination, and had a will that put him in a league of his own. The little guy, Iverson, was never the tallest or the strongest guy on the floor, but if we were weighing hearts his would tip the scale.

After an illustrious NBA career, Allen Iverson, was inducted into the National Basketball Association Hall of Fame. Iverson is pound for pound “the greatest player” in NBA History.

Allen Iverson gave an emotional speech at his Hall of Fame induction ceremony Friday. The Answer thanked everyone from his wife Tawanna and their four kids, to his favorite musicians: Tupac, Biggie, Jadakiss, Redman and Michael Jackson.

There were funny stories, like the first time he met Michael Jordan, and jokes about the ups and downs of his turbulent career.

But while Iverson spent a lot of time shouting out his basketball heroes, coaches and teammates, he almost teared up while thanking his wife Tawanna:

“I can’t thank you enough for all you’ve done for me. Not just my career. Yeah, obviously you enabled me to go to work and you took care of home, but loving me the way you do, and caring about the type of person i am and what type of person i need to be to set an example for our babies, you’re just the best to me. i love you so much. i look forward to spending two more decades with you. and i want you to be proud of yourself. i want you to walk around and understand that you are a Hall of Famer.”
