Hip-hop fans are petitioning to the Grammy association to get them to consider mixtapes, which are generally free and not commercially released, for nominations for the prestigious academy awards. While this would open up a lot of legitimately good music for consideration, it would also open the pool wide enough to include a lot of the noise and nonsense that the internet is typically home to. And while hip-hop sees some of its coolest, most creative and experimental work in its mixtapes, opening up the restrictions for Grammy nominations may be just like opening up Pandora’s box.
