During the holiday season, buying that perfect gift can be tricky.

Not sure about who you are buying for but it seems that people always have high expectations. When you head out to the stores and the malls looking for that clever gift idea, there are a few things that should never make it under the Christmas tree.

Here are 10 gifts that you should never give.

1) PETS

Unless you’re picking up Fido or Fluffy for your own family, don’t make pets a surprise gift. Of course the magical morning on Christmas having a puppy or kitten appear is fun and memorable, but what about the day after that? And the day after that? You just gave them an additional responsibility.

2) GYM MEMBERSHIP

You might as well tell them that they need to workout. People aren’t thinking about fitness during the holiday season. This gift would only be seen as one thing, a slap in the face.

3) SCHOOL OR OFFICE SUPPLIES

Really? No one wants to be reminded of school or work on Christmas day. If the pen is made of solid gold or has their name or initials and the notebook is leather-bound for writers, avoid giving a pack of Post-Its for a gift.

4) BATHROOM SCALE

If you want to get a slap in the face, this is the gift. Basically you’re saying “I think you’re fat.”

5) SELF-HELP BOOKS

This gift screams ” You need help!” No one wants to hear that. This is also another “slap-able gift”.

6) DIET COOKBOOKS

See gift number 2 and 4.

7) FRUITCAKE

Unless you know the recipient of this gift loves fruitcake, which is probably 2% people in the world, stay away from this bad gift. You might as well said, “Couldn’t come up with a gift so take this disgusting dessert.”

8) DONATIONS MADE IN YOUR NAME

This gift just points out that you don’t normally give back to worth organizations and says that “you’re cheap.” You’d be better off giving a gift card to anywhere.

9) SOAP

This gift just makes the receiver of this gift think “are you trying to tell me something?” If it’s decorative soap, then why exactly are you giving them this soap that can’t be used?

10)  CLEANING SUPPLIES

You may think that that new “Sham-Wow” would be a great gift, keep it. No one wants to be reminded of a messy house or apartments.
