Usher has made multiple hits throughout his two-decade career, but he’s not really known for being a socially conscious singer. That changes with the emotionally weighty “Chains,” which features Nas and songwriter Bibi Bourelly.

The song is notable for coming with an interactive experience called “Don’t Look Away.” It’s an interactive video that shows the victims of police brutality and racial injustice through stark, black-and-white portraits. The twist is how it uses face-recognition technology to force the viewer to look at these victims; it stops if he/she turns away or switches tabs.

“I chose to introduce the song through the ‘Don’t Look Away’ experience because it is important not only to feel the issue but to face it,” Usher said in a statement. “The pain and suffering that these victims and their families have endured is something we must never forget. When we look away from this problem it gets worse. To fix it, we have to face it.”

Experience “Don’t Look Away” above or over at TIDAL. Usher will deliver a debut performance of “Chains” at this month’s TIDAL X: 1020 concert concert.
