The Debut Of Mos Def: Black on Both Sides

On this date in 1999, Yasiin Bey, formally known to the hip-hop world as Mos Def, released his debut album Black on Both Sides. This came after the 1998 collaboration with Talib Kweli, Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star.

That album raised the bar high as far as expectations of Mos Def’s first studio album, and to hip-hop heads, reached that bar. The album went gold in 2000 selling over 500,000 copies.
