Boom Moment In Hip-Hop (May 11th)

On this date in 1999, Snoop Dogg released his fourth studio album and his second under No Limit Records, appropriately titled No Limit Top Dogg.

The lead single featured two west coast emcees, Xzibit and Nate Dogg, and production credited to Dr. Dre and Master P called “B**** Pease”, which was then followed by the second single “G Bedtime Stories” both successful singles from Snoop that year.

The album sold just under 200,000 records and debuted at number 2 on US Billboard 200 chart, landing only behind Ricky Martin’s self-titled album.

The album was Snoop Dogg’s first album NOT to debut at number 1, but did eventually go on to sell over 1,100,000 copies closing out that year. The crazy part was, while selling over a million records that year, it was only the 73rd best selling album that year!

No Limit Top Dogg is considered by many to be Snoop’s best project released under No Limit Records, while Rolling Stone magazine went on to say:

“Snoop’s finest work since his debut album…full of seductive party jams that will keep heads bobbing through the summer. Snoop has returned to West Coast G-funk with the help of some old friends…like Dr. Dre and DJ Quik.”
