Sunday was one of the deadliest days in Sierra Leone in the four months that the Ebola outbreak began spreading in the West African. Sierra Leone’s Emergency Operations Centre reported 121 deaths yesterday, bringing the nation’s Ebola death toll to a shocking 678.
Stats from Sierra Leone’s Operations Centre also shows 81 new cases of the horrendous disease. The overall death toll from the epidemic reached 3,439 out of a total of 7,492 cases in West Africa and the United States as of Oct. 1, the World Health Organization said last week.
Initially, international assistance to the outbreak in Sierra Leone was slow. The New York Times reports that, because of battles over politics and shipping costs, a shipping container full of medical supplies has been sitting on the docks in the capital of Freetown for nearly two months.
The fifth American Ebola patient, Thomas Eric Duncan (the only person to be diagnosed in the U.S.) has recently gone from “serious” to “critical” without explanation. He’s currently being treated at Dallas’s Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, where he’s fighting for his life. The people Duncan came into contact with are all being monitored.
NBC News cameraman Ashoka Mukpo is the sixth case of an American with the Ebola virus. It’s being reported that he contracted the disease in Liberia while working in Liberia. He tested positive for Ebola on Thursday and thinks he may have been infected prior to that when he was helping spray down a vehicle used to transport a victim. Although there’s no cure, doctors at the Nebraska Medical Center successfully treated American doctor Rick Sacra for Ebola. Mukpo is being treated at the same Nebraska hospital, but they have no decided on a treatment plan for him yet.
Even though we’re facing our own devastation with Ebola, the powers that be here in America are still doing what they can to help the devastation in West Africa. We have deployed 4,000 military personnel to Liberia to support efforts to combat the outbreak, which is shocking more affected than Sierra Leone. Britain and China have sent personnel to Sierra Leone, while Cuba sent a 165-member medical team last week and they will be there for at least six months. Brave souls indeed.
According to reports Ebola was first reported in Guinea in March and has since spread to neighboring Liberia and Sierra Leone in what has become the worst epidemic of the disease since Ebola was identified in 1976.
We’ll be following the latest developments with the virus.
