An exhibition of 55 photographs that tells the story of Philadelphia’s civil rights activism including William Penn’s belief in religious freedom, Benjamin Franklin’s activism to gain American independence, abolitionists including Lucretia Mott and William Still, civil rights leaders Octavius Catto, Leon Sullivan, and Cecil B. Moore, gay activists like Barbara Gittings, women’s rights activist Ernesta Ballard, and today’s leaders who seek equality for the LGBT community and all of Philadelphia’s citizenry. Often referred to as the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection, Philadelphia is known for its inclusiveness and its belief in civil rights for all Americans.
