Jason Collins, has made history with the Brooklyn Nets as the first openly gay athlete to play a game in US major sports. He made his debut Sunday night wearing the No. 46 but moving forward Collins will wear the No. 98 in honor of Matthew Shepard, a student at the University of Wyoming who was tortured and murdered in October 1998.  “Shepard’s murder brought national and international attention to hate crime legislation at the state and federal levels.”[1] Collins has worn the jersey number with both the Celtics and Wizards.

In a post game interview, Collins chose to make the focus basketball as opposed to his sexuality. It seems Collins will let his jersey do the speaking for him from here on out.
