At the end of the 2012-2013 school year, the Philadelphia School District closed 24 schools and laid off thousands of employees. Over the summer, the city of Philadelphia agreed borrow $50 million just to be able to open schools on time. However, even with that money, schools opened with minimum staffing and many program cuts.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter called into “On Your Mind with Mia Mendez” to discuss the Philadelphia School District’s fiscal crisis.
