The job of every defense, no matter the sport, is to prevent the other team from scoring more than your team. In this young NFL season the Philadelphia Eagles have established a reputation of doing just that. Sunday night’s 19-17 victory over the New York Giants gave the Eagles their third win of the season.

As nerve wrecking as the game ended, with two missed field goal attempts by New York Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes the Eagles seemed to be in control of the game throughout the second half. Who knew that as putrid as the Eagles run game looked in the first half, Head Coach Andy Reid, would continue to trust in LeSean McCoy and continue to dial up run plays.
Not only does the run game help balance the offense and keep the opposing defense from teeing off on our offensive players, it also helps our defense. How often have the Eagles offense been known for having quick three and out possessions. The Eagles defense is finally getting good rest between possessions and also getting enough time to work on technique and scheme adjustments.
It’s obvious that when each part of this Eagles team (Offense, Defense, Special teams) pulls their weight, they look like a championship caliber team. No turnovers by the offense, combined with solid play by the defense and that 2 point victory over the Giants actually felt like it should have been a blowout. There is no such thing as a perfect game in football and with all the good that came from the Eagles victory over the Giants they need to tighten up on kickoff coverage and get Kurt Coleman to stop peeking into the backfield and blowing pass coverage.
Next week the Eagles head across state to take on the Pittsburgh Steelers in what should be another great game. What do you think the outcome of that game will be?
