Today we recognize NBA Hall of Famer Julius Erving for our Black History Month Local History Makers!

The Spotlight

Julius Erving is an American retired basketball player who competed in both the ABA and NBA, and is a pioneer of the unique style of play that lives throughout the NBA today.

● He won an NBA Championship with the Sixers in 1983

● Julius also won four Most Valuable Players, finished his career with over 30,000 points and In 1993, Erving was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

● Erving found success in business and as a basketball executive career. His investments include: ownership of a Coca-Cola bottling plant in Philadelphia, as well as cable television stations in New York and New Jersey. He also worked as an in-studio analyst for NBC during its coverage of the NBA.

Having left college early to pursue a professional career, Erving earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst through the University Without Walls program in creative leadership and administration in 1986.
