What does this mean for the Sixers and the City of Philadelphia? Well, it’s not as bad as it may first appear, it’s quite a gutsy business move. Williams would have received $6.39 million next season from the Sixers. Under the terms of the new collective bargain agreement, if the Sixers were to give him an extension before his contract expired then it could only be for 3 more seasons. Now by opting out they can offer him a lucrative 5 year deal while other teams can only offer him a 4 year deal. Now of course it could go the other way and Williams could leave us. Teams can begin negotiating with potential free agents on July 1
