A new report from The National Retail Federation says that 96-percent of retailers claim that they have fallen victim to shoplifting in the past year.

This is a 94.5 percent increase than the previous year.

“Criminals have become more desperate and brazen in their efforts, stopping at nothing to get their hands on large quantities of merchandise,” NRF vice president of loss prevention, Rich Mellor said.

The most popular stolen items include electronic toothbrushes, jeans, expensive vacuums, and infant formula.

Items that are unique to this year’s report are Kitchen Aid mixers, GPS systems, and educational toys and games.

So, how are the bandits getting away with so many items?

Experts say many of the thieves use hand signals, foil-trimmed purses, boxes and shopping bags.

They also use signal jammers to overcome the inventory control tags.

The report lists Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Houston, Dallas, Miami, Phoenix, San Francisco, and Washington D.C. as the most affected cities.
