Sesame Street will be introducing their new resident by the name of Julia. She’s creating quite the buzz as she’s the first character with autism. Julia introduced as a character in Sesame’s books first and immediately became a fan favorite. This caused producers to write her in the show.
In Julia’s first scene Elmo and Abby Cadabby introduce her to Big Bird, but she doesn’t try to shake their hands at first. Elmo explains to Big Bird that because Julia has autism, “sometimes it takes her a little longer to do things.”
“It’s tricky because autism is not one thing, because it is different for every single person who has autism,” “There is an expression that goes, ‘If you’ve met one person with autism, you’ve met one person with autism.” said “Sesame Street” writer Christine Ferraro
What makes this story just as amazing is the voice of Julia, Stacey Gordon, has a son Autistic Son. This will make Julia shine bright because the person playing her has first hand knowledge with autism and knows how to treat and handle children whom are autistic. So therefore children who watch the show will gain much insight and awareness.
