Every so often Bill Maher will say something that’s offensive and over-the-top. Friday was his most recent incident.
In a discussion based around Black Lives Matter (BLM) protesters and who they’ve chosen to target in a overtly public manner, the HBO talk show host of “Real Time with Bill Maher” called them “f**king idiots”. But let’s rewind.
Here’s the context: On the stage with Maher was Michael Eric Dyson, Fran Lebowitz, Joanna Coles, and Mark Ruffalo.
Maher began the discussion with the diverse group of leftists with a critique on the direction of upset. “As we all know, racism epicenter is the Oscars and Hillary Clinton,” Maher sarcastically noted. “It is a little crazy that the protest I see have to do with the Oscars and Hillary Clinton… Of the thousands of things I could complain about with Hillary Clinton, being a racist really doesn’t rise to the top of it.”
Adding, “Does this [activist who interrupted Hillary] realize that Donald Trump in South Carolina… 20 percent of the voters who voted for Donald Trump disagree with the Emancipation Proclamation? And this is who you’re going after? This is where we start the battle? You f***ing idiots!”
Breaking up the audience applause, Dyson then jumped in to defend the BLM protestor, Ashley Williams who held up a sign on Wednesday that said “We have to bring them to heel” in reference to Clinton’s 1996 statement supporting a federal crime bill that disproportionately affected African-Americans. Dyson notes that BLM protesters aren’t calling Clinton a “racist” but are implying that negative consequences happened as a result of mass incarcerations, enacted by her husband, Former President Bill Clinton.
And in defense of why the protesters are targeting Democratic candidates opposed to Republicans, Ruffalo made an important note. “The party that is supposed to be for Black people has let [Black people] down continuously,” he said. “And that’s why the Black Lives Matter movement is going after the Democrats. Because they’re the ones who are suppose to be on their side. They’ve given up on the Republicans!”
The conversation was pretty heated. But the overall message trying to be conveyed by the panel to Maher was that it’s not about targeting Democrats—it’s about figuring out who’s the lesser of two evils when it comes to candidates proclaiming to be for us.
And really, that will be the biggest deciding factor when it comes to November elections.
