Another black eye for the Philadelphia reputation. You may have not of been aware, but a robot by the name of HitchBOT has made its way cross-country across Canada, the Netherlands, and Germany, and now was about to embark on a new journey in the United States.

However, 300 miles into the trip, HitchBOT’s journey came to an end.

“HitchBOT’s trip came to an end last night in Philadelphia after having spent a little over two weeks visiting sites in Boston, Salem, Gloucester, Marblehead, and New York City,” the BOT’s “family” said on its website. “Unfortunately, hitchBOT was vandalized overnight in Philadelphia, sometimes bad things happen to good robots.”

HitchBOT was entirely dependent on the kindness of strangers. It traveled by itself and couldn’t move on its own but required friendly humans to take it from place to place.

“HitchBOT was designed as a social robot with a personality and all the classic elements of drama, so it had a quest, and that quest was fraught with obvious dangers,” creator David Harris Smith told CNN.
