About 20 prominent Black women (Dr. Barbara Williams-Skinner, Attorney Barbara Arnwine, President of the Lawyers Committee on Civil Rights, Melanie Campbell, President of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation, Sheila Tyson, a City Councilwoman from Birmingham, Ala., and Marcia Dyson, CEO of the Women’s Global Initiative) arrived at the U.S. Capitol office suites of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Thursday morning to meet with him over the delay in confirming Attorney General nominee Loretta Lynch. Lynch has officially been waiting for 138 days and the average wait time for an Attorney General nominee is 18 days. This ridiculous wait time of 138 days is the longest wait in 31 years and longer than the last five nominees combined.
“We will not be moved, we will not go back, we will not stop,” said Dr. Barbara Williams-Skinner as she led a prayer outside the door of the U.S. Capitol office of Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) as staff and U.S. Capitol Police Officers stirred nearby.
So why are the powers that be delaying Lynch so much? It’s being reported that the hold up has nothing to do with Loretta’s qualifications or her personal life. However, many of us are assuming that it has a lot to do with race and gender. “If it looks like a duck and talks like a duck it’s a duck. The duck is that she’s being treated differently. That’s a standard that allows some people to call this both racist and sexist,” Dr. Skinner told reporters a few feet from Majority Leader McConnell’s door.
We have been without a newly confirmed leader at the Department of Justice. And we’re going to have to wait another two weeks anyway because Lynch is on Easter recess until April 13. She best rest up so she can be ready for this new role. We’re certain it’s hers, that’s why there’s a hold up. Haters gon’ hate.
There is talk that Vice President Joe Biden may have to break a tie for Lynch to be confirmed. Complicating matters further, Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ), a Democrat, won’t reveal if he will vote in favor of her nomination. It has been widely reported that Menendez is facing a federal indictment. Welp. We’ve been patient for this long, what’s two more weeks? What’s awesome is that these amazing and powerful Black women decided to stop standing for the foolishness and confront it head one. Who run the world!?
