Roy Ayers has been a dominant influence in contemporary music for decades. The Los Angeles native, now living in New York City, is one of the most sampled songwriters in recorded music. Artists from the Roots to Mary J. Blige, among many others, have either covered or sampled his infectious tunes.
Ayers is largely credited with blending genres such as jazz, funk, r&b to create a hybrid form of music that would be called acid jazz, smooth jazz, and later neo soul. I call it innovative and inspiring music. Grammy winning artist Erykah Badu dubbed Roy the Godfather of Neo Soul. Far more than that, Roy Ayers is a revered cultural ambassador for feel good and timeless music. Soulful Sunday caught up with Ayers who recently returned from a European tour.
