The first thing that comes to mind when a person says “Donate” is money. Yesterday as Hot1079 hosted a Boys and Girls club radiothon I thought of how some people may think that if they didn’t have money to provide they couldn’t make an impact.

Money helps to get things moving and making sure boys and girls have a facility to go to  to escape the realities of their everyday life. We want to make sure after the radiothon is over that adults with time and an open heart could donate their time and effort to help mentor the youth at the various boys and girls clubs around the city.

Boys and Girls who benefit from the various recreation centers around our city are bad children or even needy. For some strange reason a perception has developed of kids who are in boys and girls clubs are troubled. Sometimes there are children from bad situations that look to the boys and girls club to be that positive place for them to take comfort in.

I’m privileged to have the opportunity to cover sports for Hot1079 but the thing I take pride in the most outside of my family is the lives of the boys I mentor through volunteering as a Pop Warner Football coach. I have a full time job, four children with homework every night but I feel obligated to mentor the twenty to thirty young men that come out for the team every year.

Now that the radiothon is over I want to challenge the Men and Fathers of the city to step up and volunteer sometime to your neighborhood boys and girls club. Women and Mothers we need you as well, but as a man, I want to make sure we set a precedent of responsibility in the home and in the neighborhood.

Im sure we all grew up knowing that one adult on the block or in the neighborhood that everyone respected. Who says each one of us can’t be that person now.
