There are some athletes, coaches and teams in sports that everyone knows care more about the integrity of the sport than winning or losing. Head Coach Joe Paterno of Penn State University has been that man throughout his storied career.
Breaking news over the weekend surprised everyone and has now tarnished Penn State’s name as well as Joe Paterno’s. Allegedly his former defensive coordinator, Jerry Sandusky, has been witnessed as having inappropriate behavior with young boys.
As details surrounding the allegations continue to emerge its hard to imagine that if they are true, how could Joe Paterno not know. There are some reports out there that say Joe Paterno reported to his Athletic Director that a witness told him Jerry Sandusky had been involved with a young boy in the schools practice facility shower.
As a coach, and a former collegiate athlete that went through the recruiting process, how can any parent of a potential student trust that you have their child’s best interest in mind. Taking care of our kids when it comes to sports is one thing, but their personal well being and safety trump anything sports released.
