Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter has taken crime fighting to a whole new level. At a press conference at Strawberry Mansion High School, the mayor had harsh words for criminals that torment the city.

“We are not going to be held hostage by these domestic terrorists in our city any longer. We’re just not going to stand for it. We’ve got a message to every punk, every criminal carrying an illegal weapon in the city of Philadelphia: got a gun? Go to jail. No more slaps on the wrist. No more falling through the cracks. No more walk away and think that nothing else is going to happen.”

He also put a serious bounty on the heads of criminals who commit homicide and carry illegal guns. The city will pay up to $20,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of someone for homicide.  Tipsters could get $500 helping recover illegal weapons. Mayor Nutter believes this could be a way to get witnesses and people of the community to come forward and aid the police in solving murders instead of more unsolved cases.

There have been 31 murders in the city of Philadelphia since the beginning of the year.  Since 1988, nearly 9,000 people have been killed. Would you turn in someone you know for $20,000? How bout turn in someone with an illegal gun? Only time will tell if Nutter’s plan will work, but something must be done.
