Tribe Called Quest, the New York-based quartet (then trio) that made some of hip-hop’s best, most original music, rightfully deserves the respect they get. So when actor/director Michael Rapaport, (“Higher Learning,” “Prison Break,” “My Name is Earl”) who grew up in New York City right around Tribe’s genesis, wanted to make a documentary about one of the world’s greatest groups, it seemed like a great fit. And “Beats, Rhymes and Life” is truly the documentary that the group deserves. It tells a compelling story not just of the evolution of the group, but of the hip-hop genre itself, as well as the young men who created it.
