The City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program unites artists and communities through a collaborative process, rooted in the traditions of mural-making, to create art that transforms public spaces and individual lives. Since its inception in 1984, Mural Arts has created more than 3,000 community driven murals and provided thousands of under-served youth and adults with award-winning arts education programming.
The Philadelphia Mural Arts Program is seeking an exceptionally well-organized Project Manager to manage mural projects and other initiatives. The Project Manager is responsible for start-to-finish management of complex public art projects. Tasks include: project planning and implementation; partnership development and maintenance; logistics management; budget development, monitoring and compliance; and communication with the full range of stakeholders from community members to funders and internal staff. The Project Manager also interacts with internal processes, using internal project management protocols. He/she also manages artists, assistant artists and other contractors, negotiating fees, timelines and performance expectations.
A large part of the Project Manager’s role is to engage the public and to negotiate community concerns to secure buy-in. Building strong, meaningful and lasting relationships with community members is a key responsibility of the Project Manager. The Project Manager serves as an ambassador of Mural Arts in project communities at all times.
The Project Manager also collaborates on project-specific marketing and public relations efforts with assistance from the Public Engagement team and shapes grant proposals and reports with the Development staff. The Project Manager is an important member of Mural Arts’ project team, working with the full staff on organizational-wide activities. The Project Manager will be expected to work some nights and weekends as project work demands.
The ideal candidate will have at least three years experience in project management. In light of Mural Arts’ goals of individual and community transformation using art, the best candidate will come to the position with a background in social services, community development, and/or community outreach. A knowledge and background in public or contemporary art or muralism a plus. He/she will be detailed oriented and have a solid record of bringing projects in on time and on budget. He/she should be able to juggle many tasks and to maintain focus in a fast-paced, high pressure environment. Ability to reorder priorities, delegate and multi-task – with ease and grace – a must. He/she must also be able to work well with many different kinds of people in diverse settings. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of organizational finance and project management software and a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record. Commitment to the mission and values of the Mural Arts Program, a solid work ethic, excellent interpersonal skills, political savvy, and a respect for teamwork are critical to success in this position.
Ideal candidates will have a BS in related field and at least 3 years of experience in project management.
